Goat

Ada 181
Rumors, carefully and cleverly circulated by Mascodagama's friends, diverted speculations toward his being a mysterious visitor from beyond the Golden Curtain, particularly since at least
 half-a-dozen members of a large Good-will Circus Company that had come from Tartary just then (i.e., on the eve of the Crimean War)—three dancing girls, a sick old clown with his old speaking goat, and one of the dancers' husbands, a make-up man (no doubt, a multiple agent)—had already defected between France and England, somewhere in the newly constructed "Chunnel."

A voluminous, black shaggy cloak of the burka type enveloped
his silhouette
inquiétante (according to a female Sorbonne cor-

neck to knee
or what appeared to be those sections of his body.

Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa)

170.05 Ada

As Ada reached for the cream, he caught and inspected her
dead-shamming hand. We remember the Camberwell Beauty
that lay tightly closed for an instant upon our palm, and sud-
denly our hand was empty.

Nymphalis antiopa, known as the mourning cloak in North America and the Camberwell beauty inBritain, is a large butterfly native to Eurasia and North America.

Ada, p.164
Cordula's mother, an overripe, overdressed, overpraised comedy actress, introduced Van to a Turkish acrobat with tawny hairs on his beautiful orang-utan hands and the fiery eyes of a charlatan—which he was not, being a great artist in his circular field.

(from Ada online,)

Stanza 5, ll. 33-40, of Marvell’s “The Garden” reads:

What wondrous life is this I lead!
Ripe apples drop about my head;
The luscious clusters of the vine
Upon my mouth do crush their wine;
The nectarene, and curious peach,
Into my hands themselves do reach;
Stumbling on melons, as I pass,
Ensnared with flowers, I fall on grass.

Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta)

http://importantwork.com/text/palefire/canto2.html

ln 270: "My dark Vanessa, crimson-barred, my blest"
The Vanessa atalanta Butterfly, aka the Red Admirable, aka the Red Admiral. From a 1970 interview with Alfred Appel:

Appel: "That particular butterfly appears frequently in your own work, too. In Pale Fire, a Red Admirable lands on John Shade's arm the minute before he is killed, the insect appears in King, Queen Knave just after you've withdrawn the authorial omniscience -- killing the characters, so to speak -- and in the final chapter of Speak Memory, you recall having seen in a Paris park, just before the war, a live Red Admirable being promenaded on a leash of thread by a little girl. Why are you so fond of Vanessa atalanta?

VN: "Its coloring is quite splendid and I liked it very much in my youth. Great numbers of them migrated from Africa to Northern Russia, where it was called "The Butterfly of Doom" because it was especially abundant in 1881, the year Tsar Alexander II was assassinated, and the markings on the underside of its two hind wings seem to read '1881.' The Red Admirable's ability to travel so far is matched by many other migratory butterflies." (Strong Opinions, 170)

PF Line 470: Negro

The juxtaposition of the phrases "a white" and "a colored man" always reminded my poet, so imperiously as to dispel their accepted sense, of those outlines one longed to fill with their lawful colors — the green and purple of an exotic plant, the solid blue of a plumage, the geranium bar of a scalloped wing. "

PF, Lines 993-995: A dark Vanessa, etc.

One minute before his death, as we were crossing from his demesne to mine and had begun working up between the junipers and ornamental shrubs, a Red Admirable (see note to line 270) came dizzily whirling around us like a colored flame.

PF, Index:
Vanessa, the Red Admirable (sumpsimus), evoked, 270; flying over a parapet on a Swiss hillside, 408; figured, 470; caricatured, 949; accompanying S’s last steps in the evening sunshine, 993.

aspen

Populus tremuloides - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Aspen is known for its leaves causing noises by even the weakest winds, due to the shape of the leaf.
From the dictionary in Japanese〔植物〕 ヤマナラシ, ポプラ 《葉柄のつけ根に近い葉の部分が平たくなっていて微風でも葉がよく揺れる》.
PF n287
During the fortnight that I had my demons fill my goetic mirror to overflow with those pink and mauve cliffs and black junipers and winding roads and sage brush changing to grass and lush blue flowers, and death-pale aspens, and an endless sequence of green-shorted Kinbotes meeting an anthology of poets and a brocken of their wives, I must have made some awful mistake in my incantations, for the mountain slope is dry and drear, and the Hurleys’ tumble-down ranch, lifeless.

Lines 609-614: Nor can one help, etc.

Now it is quieter, except for an irritating wind rattling through the withered aspens, and Cedarn is again a ghost town, and there are no summer fools or spies to stare at me, and my little blue-jeaned fisherman no longer stands on his stone in the stream, and perhaps it is better so.

Ada, Ardis 158.10
Ada, doing her feminine best to restrain and divert her sobs by transforming them into emotional exclamations, pointed out some accursed insect that had settled on an aspen trunk.

Bolete

Bolete - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A bolete is a type of fungal fruiting body characterized by the presence of a pileus that is clearly differentiated from the stipe, with a spongy surface of pores (rather than gills) on the underside of the pileus. "Bolete" is also the English common name for fungal species having this kind of morphology.

Crystal vases with crimson roses and golden-brown asters were set here and there in the fore part of the shop - on a gilt-wood console, on a lacquered chest, on the shelf of a cabinet, or simply along the carpeted steps leading to the next floor where great wardrobes and flashy dressers semi-encircled a singular company of harps.
